In the past five years, LuskinOIC has trained over 500 emerging health care professionals across more than 50 different programs.

Pediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship

LuskinOIC is proud to be one of the only standalone pediatric orthopedic fellowship programs in the US. In addition, LuskinOIC pediatric orthopedic fellowship is accredited by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA). Our one-year fellowship allows orthopedic surgeons to become specialists in the nuanced treatment of pediatric orthopedic conditions while rotating at LuskinOIC downtown and Santa Monica locations and at UCLA Santa Monica and UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Centers. As one of the largest pediatric orthopedic programs in the west, LuskinOIC is a unique place to receive sub-specialty training, both locally in southern California and world-wide as part of our International Children’s Program.

Perry Initiative Outreach Program

Created in 2009, The Perry Initiative was created in 2009 to give female high school and medical students interested in pursuing careers in medicine and engineering a boost to their professional aspirations. The event is part of the nationally acclaimed Perry Initiative Outreach Program, which works to inspire young women to be leaders in these fields and to foster their understanding of and appreciation for the career that may lie ahead.

On the first day, women in the Medical Student Outreach Program (MSOP), who are undecided on their specialty, hear lectures and presentations from leading women surgeons, while also performing hands-on skills modules and mock orthopedic surgeries. The following day, young women from high school attend a program where they hear from women leaders in the fields of medicine and engineering and perform biomechanics exercises.

Graduate Medical Education

LuskinOIC is proud to be the official training site for several area residency and fellowship programs. Trainees come to LuskinOIC for education in clinical care of pediatric orthopedic conditions as a part of their specialty training and elective rotations.

Types of specialties currently training:

Medical Students

In addition to Graduate Medical Education, LuskinOIC is also an official training site for Medical Students at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. Medical students are mentored by faculty members assisting in research and clinical care beginning in year 2 and continuing through year 4. LuskinOIC serves as an elective rotation site for sub-interns interested in exploring careers in surgery and orthopedics. LuskinOIC also receives and mentors students from other medical schools through the medical students programs of UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine and LuskinOIC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Pre-Medicine Undergraduate Opportunities

LuskinOIC commitment to education begins long before medical school. Pre-medicine undergraduates are supported by LuskinOIC robust volunteer services program with placements in clinical and non-clinical areas that give interested students an opportunity to be a part of LuskinOIC mission while being introduced to a clinical care environment.
Following graduation, pre-medicine candidates can also apply for the opportunity to work alongside our Faculty members and clinicians during their gap year as Clinical Research Coordinators.

Graduate Nursing Programs

LuskinOIC offers preceptorships for nurse practitioners in training as part of a formal education rotation through graduate schools. NP preceptors have the opportunity to learn under the supervision of our nurse practitioner and physician assistant clinicians in our Urgent Care and Specialty Clinics. Preceptors also participate in educational case conferences along side physician faculty and trainees as part of their rotation.

Allied Health and Undergraduate Nursing

LuskinOIC currently serves as a training site for radiologic technician trainees. At LuskinOIC, trainees have the unique opportunity to learn at a facility that performs over 46,000 x-rays annually. In addition, LuskinOIC is home to an EOS imaging system, a low-dose x-ray unit, that was one of the first available in the Los Angeles area.

In this program, nursing students rotating through LuskinOIC have the opportunity to learn about careers in nursing and nursing administration.

Continuing Education Programs

Herbert H. Stark Memorial Lecture Series

The Herbert H. Stark, M.D. Memorial Visiting Professorship is a unique event that bridges both USC and UCLA medical education programs across several surgical specialties including microsurgery/hand, plastic and orthopedic surgery.
Herbert H. Stark was an internationally known hand and upper extremity surgeon who devoted his entire professional life to the development and education of physicians interested in the surgery of the hand. Throughout his professional career Dr. Stark lectured extensively on the management of problems of the hand. His humanitarian services during his distinguished career earned him many honors and awards from his community, grateful parents and his fellow physicians. The Memorial Lectureship is held annually in remembrance of Dr. Stark’s many educational and humanitarian services during his distinguished career.
The lectures emphasize anatomic principles in the modern care of disease and injury of the hand. Each year, LuskinOIC selects a speaker recognized expert and uniquely qualified to present a state-of-the-art review of these subjects. The lectures are specifically designed for orthopedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, general surgeons, hand surgeons, hand therapists, and other healthcare providers interested in problems of the upper extremity.

Dr. Lowman was internationally recognized for orthopedic surgery and pediatric orthopedics. Each year, LuskinOIC invites an exemplary pediatric orthopedic surgeon to speak to LuskinOIC and UCLA grand rounds and participate in case presentations with trainees. In addition, the Lowman Visiting Professor serves as speaker and expert panel for the Combined Pediatric Orthopaedic Visiting Professor Program in collaboration with CHLA and Shriner’s for Children.

Combined Pediatric Orthopaedic Visiting Professor Program

Started in 2001, the Combined Pediatric Orthopaedic Visiting Professor Program is a shared program sponsored by LuskinOIC, CHLA and Shriner’s for Children. The annual combined program features visiting professors invited by all three pediatric orthopedic programs to offer education to community pediatric orthopedic surgeons.
