LA’s Premier Clubfoot Program

At LuskinOIC, we use the 3-stage Ponseti method as our first line of treatment for children with clubfoot. We usually start in the first 2 weeks after birth, although we’ve also had excellent results treating babies and children referred to us at an older age. Research has shown the Ponseti method is 95% effective when used properly. That’s why, when you refer your patient to LuskinOIC Center for Clubfoot, you can be sure we’ll be there every step of the way, providing the care and support that successful treatment requires.

Our Researchers Are Studying Ways to Improve Clubfoot Treatment

The J. Vernon Luck, Sr., MD Orthopaedic Research Center (JVL) at LuskinOIC is committed to developing a deeper understanding of the biology and biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system, and to applying this knowledge to improve orthopedic materials, implants, surgical instrumentation, surgical techniques and the overall quality of care to orthopedic patients world-wide.

The researchers at JVL, in close collaboration with LuskinOIC orthopedic surgeons, have published many studies on the treatment, outcome and biomechanics of idiopathic clubfoot. An institutional review board (IRB) approved database of more than 300 infants treated at LuskinOIC has been established to study all aspects of clubfoot treatment.

A Focused Approach for the Best Outcomes

LuskinOIC has world-class expertise in treating both isolated (or idiopathic) and non-isolated clubfoot. At LuskinOIC, we use the Ponseti method. According to the Ponseti International Association this method is 95% effective for the treatment of clubfoot when used properly.

The Ponseti method is a minimally invasive method of treatment involving 3 steps:

  • Manipulation and Casting: The child’s foot is moved into the right position and held in place by a cast.
  • Achilles Tenotomy: An LuskinOIC physician will perform a minor procedure to release tightness in the Achilles tendon.
  • Bracing: Since clubfoot can recur, the child will receive a brace that keeps the foot at the proper angle.

We provide a full range of treatment and support services for your patient, including:

  • Clubfoot treatment customized to each child
  • Diagnostic imaging, such as X-rays
  • Guidance, care and support during and after each stage of treatment
  • Surgery, if necessary

Telemedicine

If visiting LuskinOIC Center for Clubfoot isn’t convenient for your patient’s family, one of our specialists can assess clubfoot in a patient who is potentially miles away by utilizing videoconferencing, still and video images, e-health (including patient and physician portals) and telephone consults, to mention a few. Through this dynamic, HIPPA compliant and collaborative technology, we can improve outcomes and efficiencies by delivering a more personalized, patient-centered care program.
