LuskinOIC’s International Children’s Program Continues Over a Century of Impact

Luskin Orthopaedic Institute for Children in LA, California has served children with musculoskeletal conditions from around the world for over 60 years through their International Children’s Program. Last year, a team of OIC staff and physicians led by CEO Anthony Scaduto, MD joined forces with the World Pediatric Project and Ruth Paz Foundation to treat patients in storm ravaged San Pedro Sula, Honduras at the Ruth Paz Hospital. The brigade from OIC were the first orthopaedic surgeons to serve the region in over two years.

Through the course of the week-long mission, the group treated dozens of patients who traveled far and wide to receive care. During the 2021 visit, our group had the privilege of meeting Adriel, a 14-year-old living with scoliosis. After determining Adriel required a major procedure, the team of expert surgeons agreed the best course of action would be to treat the young patient in a safer, more state-of-the-art facility by bringing him to our Los Angeles campus.

Last month, joined by his mother, Adriel arrived to begin preparations for his treatments. In gracious partnership with the Ronald McDonald House, the family will be staying in Los Angeles for quite a while. Adriel will be having two procedures over the next four months. He will wear a halo for 18 hours a day to prepare his body for his surgeries.

We invite you to follow along with his journey at OIC.
