Osteoid osteoma is a small non-cancerous tumor that typically develops on the femur (thigh) or tibia (shin bone). It does not spread, but causes a bone to grow around it. It also creates an osteoid bone, which is abnormal bone material.

Causes

The cause of an osteoid osteoma is unknown.

Symptoms

Common signs and symptoms of osteoid osteoma are:

  • Dull or achy pain that worsens at night
  • Limping
  • Muscle atrophy (loss of muscle tissue)
  • Leg bowing deformity
  • Muscle spasms
  • Nerve symptoms
  • Growth disturbance
Diagnosis

To determine if your child has osteoid osteoma, your specialized doctor may perform multiple tests such as:

  • Physical exam
  • Imaging tests such as X-rays, MRIs, CT scans or bone scans
  • Blood tests
